Last night the Yankees defeated the Orioles 14-4. Once again the ‘Baby Bombers’ struck. The energy was provided by Yankee phenom Gary Sanchez. After singling in the first, Mark Teixeira hit a home run to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The Yankees would never look back. In the fifth Sanchez connected for his tenth home run, all in the month of August. He finished the night 3-5 with 4 runs batted in.
Luis Cessa put in another solid day of work on the mound. After giving up a home run to Manny Machado in the first inning, he was able to recover and put up goose eggs on the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Cessa would give up 2 run homer to Machado in the sixth, but would finish the day with a very respectable 6IP, 5H, 3ER, 1BB, 5K.
The Yankees are starting to peak at the right time. As Baltimore continues to fade down the stretch, the Yankees continue to play strong baseball. The Yankees trail the Orioles by just three games in the loss column. With more than a month of the season to go could Gary Sanchez and the ‘Baby Bombers’ be sparking the Yankees toward a playoff push of improbable proportions?
At one point this season Vegas had the Yankees at a 3% chance to make the playoffs. Now, after the emergence and historic start by Gary Sanchez the Yankees have new life. The youth in the Yankee line up has added a spark and energized the entire Yankee team. With each given day another Yankee seems to start getting hot at the dish. Ronald Torreyes, who has been a Yankee spark plug all season is scalding hot right now. Torreyes is batting .478 over his last seven games. The Yankee youth has also seemed to spark Starlin Castro as he has mashed a .302 average with 5 home runs over his last fifteen games. The Yankee offense which has struggled for most the season seems to be hitting on all cylinders.
The youth has also had an effect on the Yankee rotation. Luis Cessa, and Chad Green who are both rookies have pitched well down the stretch. If they can provide stability for the Yankees with this newly awoken Yankee offense they can win a lot of games. The Yankees are 15-8 in the month of August which includes three really tough losses the week before.
Below we will look at splits of the three biggest August producers for the Yankees in the month of March.
Gary Sanchez- .425/10HR/20RBI
Starlin Castro- .299/6HR/17RBI
Ronald Torreyes- .423/1HR/4RBI
The Yankees pitching staff also seems to be coming on at the right time. With Tanaka pitching like a true ace, and both the rookie pitchers putting together solid starts in what we have seen of them thus far. Michael Pineda and CC Sabathia have also pitched better of late. CC has a rejuvenated approach on the mound in his last outing pitching seven dominant innings against the Mariners.
This Yankee team may be just young and naive enough to make a true playoff push. The other teams in the league better look out for the Yanks. After all this team is young and talented enough to make up the ground the veterans couldn’t.
