Never Say Never: Yankees And Tyler Austin Electrify New York With Stunning 7-6 Victory Over Jays

If you didn’t believe before then you better get ready to start believing. The Baby Bombers have given this Yankee team the boost it needed to reach the post season. The Yankees found themselves down 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th. After an Aaron Judge single, the hottest current Baby Bomber hit a Birthday Bomb to deep right field to give the Yankees the lead. The Yankees were ahead 3-2 in the 8th with 2 outs and no one on. After the bullpen got in some trouble Ben Heller gave up a 2 run base knock that put the Yankees down 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 8th.

In the bottom of the eighth the Blue Jays turned to Jason Grilli to get the three ours needed to get to Osuna, their closer. Down 4-3 Ellsbury lead the inning off with a single and would score on a Didi triple to tie the game. Castro would get a sac fly to put the Yankees ahead 5-4. The Yankees weren’t done yet though as Headley hit a two run bomb to give the Yankees some insurance runs and put it at 7-4.

The Yankees turned to Betances to secure the 3 run lead in the ninth. After walking the first two, and throwing a wild pitch Betances gave up an infield single to Encarnacion. After 27 pitches Betances recorded his first out by striking out Martin. He then walked Navarro to load the bases. After allowing yet another infield single Girardi pulled Betances for Parker. Parker struck out Pillar, and in the next at bat it looked like Smoak had hit a grand slam to seal the Yankees fate, but Brett Gardner made an unbelievable play against the wall to preserve the win. Watch Gardners improbable game saving catch below.

My Reaction:

Wins like this are unbelievably encouraging. The last series against Toronto they could have easily pulled off a sweep, but continued to let them get away. Tonight with the help from the Baby Bombers the Yankees won by far their biggest game of the year. You just get the feeling that something special is going on in the Bronx right now. After the Yankees unloaded veterans and handed this team over to the Baby Bombers there has been a spark that is undeniable. The Yankees have set themselves up in prime striking position for a playoff spot. Coming into this home stand I said that the Yankees needed to be 8-2 to really get serious. They have started off 2-0 and just need to go 6-2 now to finish that goal. Tomorrow we will see if the Yankees can finally pull off a series sweep. If they did they would only be 3 games out of the division lead. The Yankees are in this race, and it looks like the Yankees have something very special brewing in the Bronx.

Player Of The Game: Tyler Austin

Earlier I put in my pre game preview that Tyler Austin was the key player in tonight’s game, and wow did he prove that. Austin is starting to drive the ball with authority and in the bottom of the 7th he hit the go ahead home run that sparked the Yankees into their 7-6 win.
