Yankee Game Preview: Yankees Go To Pineda For Rubber Match Versus Dodgers

The Yankees will turn to righty Michael Pineda in today’s crucial game against the Los Angeles Dodgers

  • Yankees 77-67
  • Dodgers 81-63
  • Bronx, NY Yankees Stadium
  • Partly Cloudy 86 degrees

Every growing day each Yankee game becomes more crucial. The Yankees and Michael Pineda (6-11 5.07ERA) face a tough task and they will be faced with battling against Clayton Kershaw (11-3 1.89ERA) who will be making his first ever start in Yankee Stadium.

Pineda has an ERA of 4.15 so far in September and surprisingly in two starts has not gone five innings in either as Joe Girardi has been managing to win games and use his bullpen to his advantage.

Kershaw is making his second start back from his injury. He pitched 3 innings in his first start back at Miami. He gave up 2 runs on 5 hits. The Yankees would be wise to try and make Kershaw work and force the Dodgers to get him out of the game early and keep the game close while getting into their bullpen.

The Yankees line up this evening will be as follows:

  1. Gardner LF
  2. Ellsbury CF
  3. Sanchez C
  4. Castro 2B
  5. Headley 3B
  6. Gregorius SS
  7. Refsnyder RF
  8. Romine DH
  9. Austin 1B

My Thoughts:

I like this Yankee line up. Given what they have it looks like this is about the best line up the Yankees could put together. I really like Romine being in the game at DH, and I think he can contribute this evening.

The Dodger Line Up will look like this

  1. Utley 2B
  2. Seager SS
  3. Turner 3B
  4. Gonzalez 1B
  5. Grandal C
  6. Reddick RF
  7. Either DH
  8. Pederson CF
  9. Toles RF

My Take For Today’s Game:

I said yesterday that I thought the Yankees would win the next two games and then take three out of four against Boston at Fenway. I’m sticking with my gut feeling on this one. Being that it’s only Kershaw’s second start back I think the Yankees can use that to their advantage. I look for Pineda to give the Yankees a solid 5 innings, and the bullpen to shut it down.

Player Of The Game: Gary Sanchez C

The Kraken is set up for a big game today in his biggest offensive test of the season. Look for Sanchez to power the Yankees to victory and have a big impact in today’s game both offensively and defensively.

Surprise Player Of Game: Romine DH

Look out for Austin Romine today. He has the best batting average with runners in scoring position. He has batted .368 this season with runners in scoring position. He has also batted .275 with 3 long balls against lefties this season. If Romine gets an opportunity to drive in runs today he could have an impact on today’s game.

Michael Pineda:

Michael Pineda will be lights out today. Look for him to dominate the Dodgers with his strong fastball, slider combo. Also look for Girardi to have a quick hook on Pineda in today’s game. I look for Pineda to be really good tonight.

Today’s Keys To Victory:

  • Get Kershaw in a pitch count and make Roberts pull him early. Keep the game close while you work on grinding Kershaw out of the game.
  • Michael Pineda has to be solid for the Yankees tonight. He has to match Kershaw until he is out of the game.
  • Get the ball to Betances with a lead!
