Yankees Fans: Don’t Forget About James Kaprielian

Yankees fans who have started looking toward some of the problems that the 2017 Yankees currently face. The Yankees 2017 rotation is filled with some question marks, and uncertainties.

One can assume that next year the Yankees will look for some upgrades in their rotation most likely via the trade market. The Yankees also have a few young arms in the minor’s that could potentially fill in such as: Bryan Mitchell, Luis Severino, Luis Cessa, Chad Green, Jordan Montgomery, Chance Adams, and others.

The one pitcher that has been over looked due to an injury though is Kaprielian. Many media outlets were portraying Kaprielian as major league ready straight out of the draft. He pitched just 18 innings this season and his ERA was 1.50. He looked prime to be fast tracked trough the system. Kaprielian ended up going down with what would prove to be a season ending injury.

Kaprielian has been progressing back from his injury, and he threw batting practice before Tuesday’s game. Kaprielian could find himself with a lot of top Yankee prospects in the Arizona Fall League this year. If Kaprielian can continue to progess, and gain back his form he could be a potential candidate for the rotation. After the injury it does seem less likely, but he already has major league stuff.

He is a 6 foot 4 200 pound right hander. He was drafted with the Yankees first round pick in 2015, the number 16th overall pick. Here is a quote from baseball America on his stuff.

“Kaprielian knows how to finish hitters off when he’s ahead in the count, with a plus curveball as his best pitch. He can land it, vary the shape of it and bury it as a chase pitch, and his feel for the curve is his strongest attribute. He has dabbled with a slider as well but has focused on the fastball, curveball and solid-average changeup for most of the spring … In several April and May starts, his velocity improved, bumping 95 and holding 92-93 deeper into games.”
Regardless, the Yankees have a true talent in Kaprielian. Though there are still many holes in the Yankee rotation. The Yankees could benefit from his progression next season.
