The Yankees 2016 season has come to a conclusion. The Yankee season was full of ups and downs this year. It was a season where we said good bye to two integral parts of the 2009 World Series team. The Yankees closed the chapters on Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira and now look forward to a team of baby bombers. It was also a season where we saw the Yankees trade off top veteran talent for young, highly touted prospects. Something that hasn’t been done since they traded Rickey Henderson.
Mark Teixeira exited the game in the top of the seventh after Blake Parker allowed a walk with one out. Tyler Austin came in to relieve him, and he left to a standing ovation at Yankee Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Yankees fell to the Orioles today. After falling behind 1-0 early. Luis Cessa gave up a 2 run home run to Matt Weiters. Brian McCann would give the Yankees a run with his twentieth home run of the season. That made for his ninth consecutive season with 20 home runs, and his tenth out of eleven seasons with 20 home runs. Matt Weiters would hit another two run homer off of Tommy Layne after coming in for Cessa.
In the bottom of the eighth Didi Gregorious knocked in Gary Sanchez off of Zach Britton. Aaron Hicks hit a laser right to first base to end the inning. In the ninth Ronald Torreyes struck out to start off the inning. Billy Butler came in to pinch-hit for Donovan Solano. Butler then hit a soft roller back to the mound. With 2 outs in the ninth Brett Gardner stepped up to the plate and struck out to make the Yankees final out of the season.
At the end of the day this is not what any Yankee fan wanted. Any season that doesn’t result in a World Championship, and especially a playoff berth is not Yankee baseball. This year was different though. The Yankees have struggled to gain any consistency over the past four seasons. After trading off Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran, and Ivan Nova they re-built their farm system, and now have a future brighter than ever.
2016 was quite the year in baseball. We said good bye to Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, David Ortiz, Vin Scully and others. We mourned the loss of Jose Fernandez and marveled at Gary Sanchez break seemingly every rookie record. It was a season of great ups and downs, and unfortunately did not pan out to our liking.
