Yankees 2016 Draft, Third Rounder: Nolan Martinez

With the 98th overall pick in the 2016 draft the Yankees selected 18 year old Nolan Martinez. The tall right hander has a great profile for a pitcher. Standing at 6 foot 2, 165 pounds. Martinez has plenty of time to mature and strengthen.

He entered the draft ranked 67th by Baseball America in the draft, and the Yankees signed him for a deal well above the slot price for a third round pick. Given his age, Martinez certainly has some potential to add to the Yankee farm system.

In his limited time with the Yankees minor league affiliate this year Martinez posted a 3.86 ERA over 7 innings. He made just three appearances.  In his second appearance he gave up three runs; however, his other two appearances he allowed no runs.

Martinez has a fastball that sits in the low 90’s and can touch up to 95. He has a strong curveball, and a changeup that he very rarely uses.

Martinez just turned 18 in June, so there is plenty of time for maturing. He has a lot of talent for his age, and if he can get stronger and learn to use his changeup more effectively he could definitely climb the ladder in the Yankees minor league system.

If you want to check out Martinez. Check out the video below. Next season should be interesting as the Martinez continues to develop and mature as a pitcher.
