According to multiple reports the Yankees are close to signing the free agent left fielder Matt Holliday.
This will more than likely eliminate them from contention in the Edwin Encarnacion sweepstakes. Which may or may not be a good thing in the eyes of many Yankee fans.
No information on the potential contract has been revealed yet.
Holliday, 36, will most likely fit in as a platoon player and DH against left handers. Last season, Holliday batted .246 with 20 homers, and 62 runs batted in 110 games.
One thing for Yankee fans to be happy about with this move, is that Holliday is great with runners on. In his career he bats .279 with a .389 OBP when there are 2 outs and RISP. He also bats .305 with RISP and a .400 OBP.
He is known for being clutch and should be able to help the Yankee offense should he be able to stay healthy.
He was able to reach base at a decent rate. He had a .322 OBP which would’ve been the third highest on the Yankees team last season.
Some fans say that this is a move to potentially help move Gardner, and still make a run at another bat yet. Only time will tell. But for a short commitment, you can count on Matt Holliday to help bolster the Yankee line up next season.
UPDATE: The deal is official 1 year/ $13 million.
