The Yankees have been aggressive this off season and as the winter meetings continue to heat up you have to imagine the Yankees will continue to be aggressive through the week in Orlando. The Yankees have dealt Starlin Castro and Chase Headley this off-season creating two job openings this upcoming season; however, you can imagine one spot is filled with super prospect Gleyber Torres set to return this season. The Yankees third basemen if the season started today would most likely be prospect Miguel Andujar, but the Yankees feel he would be better suited for another year of seasoning in the field.
The Yankees have been connected to starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates as the Yankees look to bolster their rotation, but the Yankees could also look for the services of utility man Josh Harrison. The 30 year old has appeared at every position in the majors except first, center, and behind the plate. His presence wouldn’t effect Torres either because they could both alternate positions throughout the season. Harrison is also signed to a team friendly deal of 10 million for the upcoming season and options for 2019 and 2020 of just about 11 million with a million dollar buyout.
This move also wouldn’t take the Yankees out of the Manny Machado sweepstakes if they decided to pursue him through free agency. It would give the team a lot of depth and a veteran presence. Outside of Harrison’s solid season at .272/16HR/47RBI/12SB he is also a great clubhouse guy and is known to be a grinder throughout the majors. He can provide the team with versatility even if Machado is signed and Gleyber Torres is what we think he is he could fill in utility positions flawlessly constantly giving someone a breather.
You have to imagine that if the Yankees are indeed going to grab Cole that it wouldn’t take much beyond that in terms of prospects if you take on the salary. Harrison would be a great person to fill in for 2018 and still be able to protect most of your farm.
What do you think? Should the Yankees pursue a trade for Josh Harrison, and at what cost?
