Yankees, Pirates Inching Closer To Gerrit Cole Trade

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Yankees and Pirates are heating up talks on Pittsburgh’s Ace, Gerrit Cole. The deal is reportedly centered around outfielder Clint Frazier, but the Pirates also are looking for a pitcher that is on the verge of the majors. The Yankees have been fascinated with the idea of bringing in Cole for some time now. Cole was originally drafted by the Yankees, but decided to not sign and would later end up being drafted by the Pirates.

Cole has had a career of highs and lows and it feels like Clint Frazier would be a high price to pay for solely Cole. If the Yankees were able to grab Josh Harrison as well in the trade it would make much more sense to be able to part with some of their outfield depth, and be able to address some of their infield depth questions by adding the versatile Harrison in the trade, but to give up Frazier and another pitcher for Cole considering his career of ups and downs somewhat similar to former Yankees, Pirates pitcher AJ Burnett.

Cole has struggled in a small sample size against the American League East posting a 5.25 ERA against the Red Sox, and a 7.20ERA against the Blue Jays. Cole has struggled to stay consistent since the 2015 season when he posted a sparkling 2.60ERA. Another concerning note on Cole is that he allowed 31 homeruns in 2017.

Perhaps the Yankees think they can straighten Cole out and turn him back into the ace that he was in 2015, but at this moment Frazier, plus another major league ready starter seems like to much of a premium to pay for Gerrit Cole, but Cashman has been a wizard and pulled off great moves for the organization so you can’t doubt his judgement at this point.
